One in three jobs is at risk of being replaced by technology in the next twenty years.

According to a recent study by Deloitte, one in three jobs is at risk of being replaced by technology in the next twenty years.

Jobs for librarians, travel agents and secretaries have already fallen by more than 40% across the UK since 2001, instead being replaced with brand new job titles including Zumba fitness instructors, app developers and social media interns.

The findings indicate that jobs paying less than £30,000 per year are almost five times more likely to be replaced by automation than those paying more than £100,000. The researchers explained that this was due to jobs involving processing, clerical and support services being more easily replaced with roles requiring digital, management and creative skills. In manufacturing, for example, technological advances could reduce the need for paid workers in the production line.

The researchers classified jobs based on their reliance on creativity, human perception and social intelligence, characteristics which are less easy to imitate with technology.

40% of occupations were classified as low or no risk. Such jobs were in skilled management, financial services, engineering and science, legal services, community services, health care and the arts and media.

It is also worth noting that technological advances are likely to create exciting opportunities within the job market, as there will be more demand for those with technical and digital know-how. Businesses will need to continue to anticipate these changes over the next few decades in order to avoid under-employment in the future.
